SPOIL Premiers With 180º South + Patagonia's Yvon Chouinard

Jan 18, 2011

On Saturday, we premiered SPOIL: The Fight To Save Great Bear in a packed theater at Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival. We were excited and honored to share the screen and stage with 180º South and a couple of the most passionate environmentalists around — Rick Ridgeway and Yvon Chouinard.

In the film, Yvon says: "The solution may be to turn around and take one step forward. It's not one step back if you just turn around 180º and take a step."

And in the case of the Great Bear Rainforest, we think he's on to something. If we allow Enbridge's pipeline to expand the Alberta tar sands through the BC North Coast and if we allow oil super tankers to ply those pristine waters, disaster is inevitable. And not just for the people and wildlife who thrive in Great Bear, but for humanity as a whole. Because as we're standing at the edge of a cliff that will define our future, instead of turning around and taking one step forward to save ourselves, we stepped forward off that cliff toward a future of ravaged ecosystems, mass extinctions and oil dependence.

Thank you to the community at Wild & Scenic for becoming allies in the fight to save the Great Bear Rainforest. It's up to us to make sure that we protect this wild and pristine place for the communities that live there and for ourselves. Watch for SPOIL on tour with Wild & Scenic and at other festivals this year. And take action to stop oil super tankers from spoiling Great Bear here.
