Witness: Defining Conservation Photography
Jan 6, 2011
What is conservation photography? In 2004, when Cristina Mittermeier searched for the term online, she found the only results shown were related to preserving images in museums… "It became clear to me that there was an open field that needed to be explored and defined."
The International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) was founded in 2005 with the mission to "bring conservation into focus" — one image at a time.
Witness is a contemporary account of the emerging genre of conservation photography and is explored through the voices and imagery of some of the best environmental communicators working today. Notable anthropologist Jane Goodall, iLCP Fellow and National Geographic Editor-at-Large Michael Nichols, and iLCP president Cristina Mittermeier, among others, share candid thoughts on the power of photography and its value as an effective conservation tool. The narrative is accompanied by stunning photographic contributions from more than 40 iLCP conservation photographers to illustrate the convergence between the conservation and photography realms.
Witness will premiere at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on January 14.
