FLORIAN SCHULZ
Born in Germany, Florian Schulz (34) is a professional
nature and wildlife photographer with a vision of broad horizons. Through
skillfully, artistic photography, he is in the constant search for breathtaking
images that inspire individuals to take action in the protection of large
endangered ecosystems.
Florian believes that partnering with conservation organizations can
greatly enrich an environmental campaign that aims to protect a threatened
ecosystem. With such alliances, he
aims to create awareness and empower people to take action towards protecting
our natural heritage. While shooting for his second corridors project, Florian
has given a high priority to the Arctic, because of the urgency to protect it
against oil development. In 2010 Florian teamed up with Earthjustice and
Patagonia to launch the visual environmental campaign "Visions of the Arctic"
against oil development in the Arctic.
Braided River committed to publish two companion books with Florian to
accompany the release of the new IMAX® movie, To the Arctic, a MacGillivray-Freeman film that
premieres in early 2011. The first book,
To the Arctic, will be a panoramic fine art photography book designed to
present to members of Congress and the media to continue the battle against oil
development in the Arctic. Still on the works, Florian continues to document for his second
photography conservation project, Freedom to Roam: Wildlife Corridors for
sustainable wilderness. The undertaken project, under the title "From
Baja to Beaufort - B2B" will lead Florian from the warm waters of
Mexico all the way up to the Arctic, along the Pacific Northwest coast line
portraying the wildness of a fragile ecosystem threatened by industry.
Schulz is a recognized speaker in the topics of
photography and inspirational conservation visions. He has delivered over 60
lectures across the United States, Canada and Germany including National
Geographic Explorer's Hall, Microsoft ProPhoto Summit, World Wilderness
Congresses and several European Photography Festivals. Honoring his commitment
to conservation, the Nature's Best Photography Awards and the National Wildlife
Federation named Schulz as the Conservation Photographer of the Year 2008.
Other awards include the NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association)
Vision Award and the Phillip Hyde Environmental Grant, which recognizes early
career excellence, vision and inspiration to others in nature photography,
conservation and education.
Schulz has dedicated
years of his life to documenting critical wildlife corridors in North
America.
Sponsored by Braided River and the Blue Earth Alliance, his first book
-Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam
(2005)-received an Independent Book Publisher Award as one of the
"Outstanding Books of the Year". Carefully selected images from his
book, where chosen to
produce a traveling exhibit by the Burke Museum in Seattle which
traveled to
The Field Museum in Chicago. Florian's photography has also been
displayed on
other important art galleries and museums like the American Museum of
Natural
History.
As the youngest founding member of the International
League of Conservation Photographers, Florian Schulz uses his photography to instill in viewers a
greater interest and understanding of the importance of interconnected
environments to maintain healthy ecosystems. His work has been published in
multiple articles by internationally recognized magazines and has won multiple
photography awards.
"My hope is to inspire a desire to create the first
National Corridor to conserve and protect wild places, as well as to fuel the
new conservation movement of connectivity. And perhaps, sharing my photography
will move people's hearts to get involve in saving North America's greatest
treasure". -
