Michele Westmorland and Karen Huntt recently returned from a two month long expedition to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands where they realized their project vision, Headhunt Revisited, Charting Cultural Change in Melanesia. The idea was born some 12 years ago when Michele was given a copy of Caroline Mytinger’s book New Guinea Headhunt. Mytinger traveled to Melanesia in 1926 to paint portraits of the people before the intrusion of the Western world changed the indigenous peoples’ way of life forever. Michele and Karen went to the area to document the people as they live today and to portray the changes that have occurred in the past 75 years.
