Dave Showalter is based in Colorado and focuses primarily on landscapes and wildlife of the American West. Dave spent four years working on 'Prairie Thunder - The Nature of Colorado's Great Plains', a conservation photo book covering Colorado’s shortgrass prairie. The book won the pictorial category at the 2008 Colorado Book Awards and marked a turning point in his photo career.
Dave is the 'volunteer' photographer for Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR, once a Superfund cleanup site turned urban refuge. He teaches a summer 'Cameras in Action' photo workshop at the refuge for city high school students. Dave’s work has been published in Outside, Outdoor Photographer, Defenders, Backpacker and other publications.
Dave is currently working on a new book project that covers the threatened sagebrush lands of the intermountain west.
Dave lives in Arvada, Colorado with his wife, Marla and their adopted yellow lab, Abby.

Blue Mesa Reservoir
A Cessna view over Willow Creek Mesa to Blue Mesa Reservoir and the West Elk Mountains. The damming of the sagebrush land for the reservoir destroyed some of the most important Gunnison Sage-grouse habitat. While we can't go back in time, it's easy to see why remaining healthy sagebrush habitat in the Gunnison Basin is very important for the bird's survival. Greater Sage Grouse Strut
A male Greater sage grouse displays, or "struts" for females on a lek in Wyoming's Upper Green River Basin. I was set up in a blind on the mating ground in mid-April. Sage grouse are among the sage obligate species that have been significantly impacted by gas drilling and were designated "Warranted But Precluded" from proitection under the Endangered Species Act in 2010. Black-tailed Prairie Dog In Trap
In 2010, the Humnane Society, World Wildlife Fund, and Defenders of Wildlife worked with the USFS to complete the first relocation of prairie dogs to public (USFS) lands.
